Scoping

Between June 2006 and June 2007, DOT&PF met with agency representatives and the public to ask what types of engineering and environmental studies might be required for the project. HDR Alaska, the project consultant, sent scientists into the field to collect baseline data on area resources including salmon and eulachon, bird and wildlife, wetlands, and hydrology. HDR engineers reviewed existing and projected traffic levels, examined existing bridge conditions, and developed rough, preliminary suggestions for potential altnerative alignments. DOT&PF is currently reviewing this information to determine the project's appropriate "Class of Action" under the National Environmental Policy Act.
DOT&PF and FHWA are initiating an Environmental Assessment (EA) to evaluate alternatives and make a final decision regarding the scope of the proposed improvement. The EA development process will take approximately two years to complete and will include public involvement and interagency consultation. The project is currently in the Scoping phase.
